KNOWHOW
TMJ Syndrome
TMJ Syndrome, also known as TM Dysfunction, is caused by an imbalance in the bite (occlusion), which can result in a variety of symptoms, although not always all of them, and occasionally only one or two.
Like all our bodily joints, the jaw is designed to work within a specific range of motion. When the jaw is out of alignment this can cause a variety of issues such as:
- Discomfort
- Difficulty eating
- Morning headaches
- Migraine
- Clicking jaw
- Neck pain
- Sensitive teeth
- Broken / Worn teeth
- Disturbed sleep
- Tinnitus

TMJ Causes
The most common cause for jaw joint problems is the way we bite and what we do in our sleep.
At your dental appoitnemtn we will analyse your bite and feel your jaw movement for any irregularities. If your bite seems normal, the most probable cause is night time grinding.
Most people aren’t even aware that they clench or grind their teeth at night but we often see evidence of this at your routine dental health assessment.

TMJ Treatments
For the most part, treatment is fairly straightforward. Many of our patients benefit from appliances that are worn during sleep such as biteguards or Tanner splints.
To make your appliance, we will start by taking impressions / scans of your mouth for make sure of a comfortable fit. We also spend time analysing your unique jaw movements and taking a bite registration so that we can recreate your jaw movements with study models.
Tanner splints are made from acrylic and is designed to allow free jaw movement at night and prevent the teeth locking together. Nightguards are often made from softer plastic and also prevent tooth wear.
If you are concerned with any jaw problems please take the time to see if we can help.
